Review of The Quick and the Dead (1995) by Dustin S — 01 May 2010
Not too shabby. I was pleasantly surprised by Sam Raimi's The Quick And The Dead, a fun shoot'em up western.
I have always been a fan of Sam Raimi and his interesting style of action and black comedy. It was kind of cool seeing his visual style in a western film. This movie somewhat reminded me of Scream in the sense that it was satirizing its own genre while also becoming a welcome addition to it.
The Quick And The Dead is not a very deep film, its very much a stylized action film that occasionally plays around with western movie cliches and conventions. One thing that stood out was the acting, with the exception of Sharon Stone(even though her character was the protagonist I found her quite dull and almost unnecessary), the rest of the cast was great. Gene Hackman, Russell Crowe, and a young Leonardo DiCaprio all gave wonderful charasmatic performances that made the movie fun to watch.
All in all The Quick And The Dead is a fun movie with exciting action, good acting and an interesting style, courtesy of Sam Raimi.
