Review of The Quick and the Dead (1995) by Chase S — 14 Jun 2010
Sam Raimi is not your typical director, so it seems fitting that he helms what is not your typical Western. Featuring such Hollywood heavyweights as Russel Crowe, Leo DiCaprio, Sharon Stone, and the fantastic Gene Hackman, The Quick and the Dead is the perfect example Raimi's offbeat style of filmmaking.
The plot is somewhat simplistic and predictable, but that didn't stop me from becoming engrossed in the action as it unfolded on the screen. The characters were believable and well-acted. Unfortunately, the film's fast pace left little time to make them very engaging. Still, the film was not lacking in action and spectacular visuals, customary of Raimi's style.
It is not, by any means, a perfect film. It is however, a fun and exciting roller coaster ride of a Western in an era of cinema when the Western is all but extinct. If you're looking for a fun rental and you enjoy a good thrill, look no further than Sam Raimi's The Quick and the Dead.
