Review of The Queen of Versailles (2012) by Jeff R — 31 Jan 2012
Superschadenfreudelicious! This doc was hilarious. The couple, who sought to build the largest house in the US, was fucking ridiculous. The economy happened, and their dreams were ruined. Yet they still continued to screw ppl over by selling them timeshares in a Vegas building that they were obviously gonna lose.
They also laid off 1,000+ workers. Now to those ppl, losing their job could really mean losing it all. This rich-ass couple, on the other hand, still had a lot of money to their disposal. They were able to keep their mansion (just not the 90,000 sq ft home they were building), which, after laying off most of the help, turned into a mess with dog shit all over the floor.
They lost their private jet (Oh no! Now they gotta fly commercial!) and some other property. Yet, through the midst of it all, the wife went to Toys R Us and bought 5 carts worth of toys! One of the things she bought was a bicycle that ended up in the garage, on a pile of dozens of unused and barely-used bicycles.
1 of the funniest bits in the movie was when the woman feared that her kids "will now have to go to college." Go to college to have a career afterwards? Oh, the humanity! Problem is, they didn't put aside a college fund for the kids, cuz obviously, college is for poor ppl.
The man wasn't any better. He wouldn't talk serious stuff w/ his wife like business and expenses and considers her "another child." She has an engineering degree. But I suppose she forgot how to think over the years when she decided to not be an engineer and become a trophy wife instead.
Everyone in the theatre thought the couple "deserved what they got." Yup--they did!
