Review of The Queen of Spades (1949) by Neil O — 23 Jan 2010
Called 'a masterpiece' by Martin Scorsese this superb film version of Alexander Pushkin's The Queen of Spades is one of British cinema's neglected gems. Anton Walbrook is on fine maniacal form as an obsessive gambler dying to know the secret of an elderly countess (Edith Evans), who has sold her soul to win at cards.
William Kellnerâ??s sets (the movieâ??s Russia is wholly a stage-bound creation) and Oliver Messelâ??s costumes deserve special mention as does Otto Hellerâ??s shadowy and atmospheric cinematography.
