Review of The Queen (2006) by Gregory G — 20 Jun 2010
Helen Mirren is commandingly austere in her Oscar-winning performance as Queen Elizabeth II in this English drama, which takes place in the aftermath of the death of Princess Diana of Wales. The witty, insightful script by Peter Morgan explores the obstinate reaction of the monarchy in response to the grieving British public.
These events are viewed as part of the wider debate of republicanism in England and the role the media played in Diana's popularity. Michael Sheen is dauntless as Prime Minister Tony Blair, seen as a modern diplomat who must do a balancing act between service to the queen and the people.
Directed with stylish elegance by Stephen Frears that elevates the material beyond a Masterpiece Theater production. Music by Alexandre Desplat; Cinematography by Alfonso Bealto; Production Design by Alan MacDonald; Costume Design by Consolata Boyle.
With James Cromwell as Prince Philip, Helen McCrory as Cherie Blair, Alex Jennings as Prince Charles, Sylvia Syms as Queen Elizabeth, and Roger Allam.
