Review of The Queen (2006) by Janice K — 30 Jun 2009
QUEEN OF THE PERFORMANCE!!!
We were somewhat reluctant to buy this blu-ray initially simply because it was not an epic movie that needs the blu-ray performance. When we won the item from ebay at a low price, we left it till last to watch it. How pleasantly surprised we were after watching the movie. I gave it a full mark and my partner gave it a 90% (we both enjoy it tremendously and this was quite uncommon).
Firstly I have to emphasize on the acting of Helen Mirren. She simply stole the movie and she truly DESERVED the oscar for her tremendous performance of the Queen. We watched this movie during the Channel 7 broadcasting of the series Royal Family and the similarities were simply ASTOUNDING. Praises must be made to the acting or even the somehow bizarre twin-like similarities of Prince Phillip and the actor in this movie. We were shockingly surprised as to the brilliantly captured characters gesture, expressions and cosmetic appearances of the movie to the real life counterparts.
To be honest I couldn't find anything wrong with the movie. The pacing was excellent with the build up of Princess Diana's death and its impact. It brilliantly portraited how the world perceived her death versus the royal family's perceptions of her death and how the royal family eventually succumbed to the public demands of the mourning of her death. Hellen Mirren's portayal of the Queen could somewhat be classified as an art in itself and it ALMOST overshadowed the whole essence of the movie about Princess Diana's death.
You owe it to yourself to at least give this movie a chance and you might just be somewhat satisfied to its content. It never bore us a bit and before we knew it, the movie ended with an extremely powerful speech given by the Queen (ooops pardon me, Hellen Mirren).
