Review of The Purple Rose of Cairo (1985) by Vero S — 15 Mar 2009
The thing I love the most about this wonderful movie is that even though its plot is fantastic, the dialogues are so natural, so realistic, so witty. The storyline is so beautiful and magical. The ending moved me to tears, and not sad tears, happy ones.
The image of Cecilia once again hypnotized and marvelled by the power of the seventh art is so powerful. In an interview, they asked Woody Allen why he didn't go with the happy ending and he said "that was the happy ending" and I so agree.
Because this movie isn't about Celia's and Tom/Gil's love, it's about her love affair with cinema, and that never ended. Which is why I love it so much, because I share that feeling. Very Woody Allen like, excellent film, the most perfect romantic comedy ever made.
