Review of The Purple Rose of Cairo (1985) by Bruce S — 13 Apr 2012
This is a wonderful movie. Like his later film, Midnight in Paris, Allen again juxtaposes reality with the screen depiction of reality. Like a surrealist dream, characters are marginally aware of their reality but even the "real" characters are just film characters.
It's a dream within a dream. Mia Farrow is adorable. Who could not love and feel for her character. Just as Tom falls in love with her, so do we. And in the end, despite the bittersweet, Cecilia is transported, albeit temporarily to happiness through the magic of the cinema.
There are so many metaphysical overtones. There is the question of whether the characters exist when the projector is turned off. Is our life too snuffed out into eternal darkness?
