Review of The Purge: Election Year (2016) by Bryan D — 01 Jul 2016
The Purge series started out as James DeManco's small, almost art house like home invasion thriller with a twist. I'll admit, I really did not care for the movie as the whole home invasion angle, despite the twist of the purge surrounding it, just does not interest me.
Yet, I gave the sequel a try "The Purge: Anarchy" and it greatly surprised me. It was a bonkers horror film with a twisted message. It managed to have a steady sense of dread without needing to constantly resort to jump scares and the like.
Some of that dread now is if you watch the news in another few years this whole scenario will seem just a touch less insane.
Fantastic production values, over the top villains and good performances by Frank Grillo and Elizabeth Mitchell mean we're due for more in this franchise.
