Review of The Purge: Election Year (2016) by Patrick W — 01 Nov 2016
This movie was probably the best in the trilogy mostly because it kept with the more action movie roots rather than suspense like the first film. It was more of the same as the 2nd film with shocking visuals but digs more into the Purge at the federal/government level.
Of course it also blatantly shows that the "evil government" is supposed to be American conservatives even in the tag line of "keep america great" as a take on Donald Trump's campaign slogan and at the end when the election results are coming in, the anti-Purge Senator carries all of the traditionally democrat states.
So that in-your-face political statement really wasn't necessary and the film could've done without that and still maintained its score because these films aren't about the message but the shock value (much like the Saw films).
This one is hit or miss. Watch if you want, but if you miss it (or the entire franchise) you won't be missing much.
