Review of The Purge: Election Year (2016) by John T — 02 Jul 2016
The Purge: Election Year has the chance to be a brilliant social commentary, as well as being politically symbolic (especially in the wake of the 2016 presidential race), yet it does nothing. The film is just mindless fodder that does nothing for itself or anyone witnessing this failure of a third installment to an already failed franchise.
Even the violence, and "intense" moments are a giant, dull bore. Coming from one who is entertained by gore and horror on film, I was dramatically bored by it all. It is seemingly, slightly racist, horribly written, clunky and obscure character development (if you want to call it character development), and even laughable at times, and not in a good way.
Overall The Purge: Election Year is a hugely missed opportunity with literally nothing going for it, except for maybe a few well-designed masks.
