Review of The Purge: Election Year (2016) by Movie M — 13 Dec 2016
I'm gonna have to go against the grain with this movie. While most people hated "The Purge: Election Year", I personally thought that this movie came with a fair amount of enjoyment, and did a decent job at capturing the intensity of the Purge series.
Granted, there were a fair share of just downright stupid scenes, such as the candy bar girl, who was an absolute bore to watch, and was the clear rough spot in the movie. I think people are taking it too hard on the Purge as a franchise, though, sure it has an amazing premise and every movie seems to flop a little bit, but what's good about all of them is that most of the time, it's intense, and the possibility that this could actually happen one day adds to the unsettling nature of it.
You could probably make the relation with the title, but this movie is all about an election, if it was a parallel to the American 2016 election or not I don't know, but I found that it definitely had some hidden elements that hint towards it.
As for acting, just like all the Purge movies, there was nothing stand out about this one, there weren't any big ticket actors (not that that would mean the acting wasn't good, you can still have good acting with low budget actors), but overall most of the excitement came from the action.
I can see why people wouldn't like this movie, but personally I had a good enough time with "The Purge: Election Year" to say that it is worth watching if you're bored.
