Review of The Purge: Anarchy (2014) by Alex M — 23 Jul 2016
The Purge: Anarchy corrects the mistakes made in the first movie by taking us out to the streets to see multiple acts of "purging" by various groups of thugs and government agencies. The political aspect of "purging" is also explored which provides an interesting angle to the "New Founding Fathers'" reasoning for the introduction of the purge.
The movie focuses on Frank Grillo's "Sergeant" character as he prepares for a night of purging with a specific target in mind. Along the way, he deviates from his original plan to help a group of people make it through the night. The main actors do an admirable job with the source material and the threats are much more menacing than in the original movie. The action flows well and we are eventually treated to a battle scene between the haves and the have-nots and an ethical dilemma that the hero eventually faces.
This movie takes the franchise in a positive direction and sets up more potential sequels for the future.
