Review of The Purge: Anarchy (2014) by Dustin I — 15 Jan 2015

A film like this with an amazing concept was always going to get a sequel and it's far from being perfect but a vast improvement from it's predecessor. It focuses on a few people but get linked later in the film and what's good about this is that it's not set in one place but this time a city, more open for more kills and carnage.

A fairly unknown cast are great during the panic with one character focused on getting revenge of his murdered son. It's almost a war on political correctness and the richer class, asking the question, does class matter?! It has some neat twists and simple production and slick direction, neatly written if a little cheesy but focuses to much on a group of people instead of seeing what is happening else where.

It does get a little silly though and any care for the characters is gone by the final third. Again, I felt the film could've been much more but it is massively better than the first film and has a lot to play around with the concept but still doesn't take that advantage.

It's still a great concept but it's not quite there yet and with a third film on it's way, hopefully it'll get it right. Good sequel and you don't need to have seen the first to understand it.
