Review of The Purge (2013) by Tiffany N — 11 Jul 2014
The worst thing about the purge is that it screws up such a fantastic concept. The main problem with the movie is that it replaces what could have been a genuinely scary horror movie with a boring generic home invasion movie. The actors really try there best which makes the movie even disappointing as you get the sense that they were trying to stand out but in the end they are as forgettable as the movie itself. I really do feel sorry for Ethan Hawke especially seeing as he had this and the getaway this year (poor guy) at least he had before midnight ( I haven't seen it but I've heard great things). Now there are some good things about the movie. Like I said the actors try very hard especially Rhys Wakefield who plays the lead villain, the only problem is that he doesn't have much to do. There are also a few creepy scenes, most of which include the creepy villains acting like small children, not in the Jim carrey way, more like children in a playground. Overall the purge could have been a great horror movie but replaces genuine scares for boring and generic action in one of the most forgettable home invasion films ever. Yeah this really is one of the worst films of the year. Due to the fact it is so disappointing movies of the year I would say it is up there with movie 43 and Texas chainsaw massacre in the worst movies of 2013.
Spoilers.
Am I the only one who didn't understand what happened to Ethan Hawke. So basically he is strapped by the leader of the villains, and after the bad guys are defeated we see him lying on the floor covered in blood, I mean what happened did he die or did he somehow survived, we are never told. I also. forgot to mention that I love the part when Lena Headey smashed the neighbor who was trying to kill her's face in the glass table. Awesome almost made me like the film, almost. D.
