Review of The Purge (2013) by Leo M — 21 Mar 2014
Awesome premise: Future America, crime is at an all time low and it's because of this the government has allowed the people of America to purge any anger or feelings out during an annual 12 hour period where all crime including murder is legal.
I feel this premise has been used to it's full potential, it's brimming with blood and gore and also makes you think, intriguing is the word I'm thinking of. Would you purge, or would you stay in the safety of your own home? Well The Sandin's have chosen to stay inside, but that's not to say they're safe.
Ethan Hawke and Lena Headey battle for their lives when they are threatened by a group of mask wearing purgers. I don't do spoilers but for the sake of explaining how intense this movie gets, the purgers only break in at the end of the film, meaning the majority of the film teases and taunts you from all directions, you have no idea where they'll enter or if they'll enter at all.
Ethan Hawke is great, he's actually playing quite a big headed person, whereas Lena Headey plays a wife who tries to keep the family calm amongst the madness, and fights back at the end, I love Lena Headey, she's one of my favourite actresses and I only saw this to see her, and the film is just as good as she is.
