Review of The Punk Singer (2013) by Mark D — 04 May 2014
Or The One About Feminism That Comes Off As Very Down to Earth...
I was completely taken off guard by how good this film was. I didn't have any idea what to expect, but from the opening moments of the movie, I was drawn in. The life of Kathleen Hanna is fascinating, but not near as fascinating as she is as a person. I found myself wrapped up in how charismatic, artistic, and brilliant she is. I can completely understand why people have flocked to her and her message for decades now. The Punk Singer is a great biography of Kathleen Hanna, but more importantly, it's a great film about feminism and artistic integrity.
There was a third act twist, that I really wasn't expecting, but director Sini Anderson handled the tonal shift perfectly. It gave a new level of emotional depth to the story, and helped to ground it in something more personal. I thought this film was great, and I think most people will enjoy it.
