Review of The Punisher (2004) by Daryl K — 29 Oct 2012
The closest to getting this character right on film so far, but that's kind of faint praise. This adaptation was limited by a low budget that forced filming in Florida instead of NYC, and the changes in the story made to accommodate this will not please comic book purists.
Also, writer/director Jonathan Hensleigh's choice to depict the character as more of a scheming agent of punishment than a gun-toting Angel of Death was a serious misstep. That said, Thomas Jane is a great bit of casting that I'd love to see in a proper Punisher film someday.
Travolta makes a good villain, too. Some individual scenes work extremely well, even if the entire film does not. A missed opportunity.
