Review of The Punisher (2004) by Michael M — 28 Jun 2016
Critics-schmitics! Some of these so-called professional film reviewers just don't get it sometimes.
Case in point: Jonathan Hensleigh's movie adaptation of Marvel Comics' iconic crime-fighting vigilante, "The Punisher". On the Internet, most of the critics gave it bad reviews, but moviegoers--including me--disagreed.
I saw the movie just last Friday (Nov. 5), and maybe I'm the last person (with my friend Jucy) to have watched this movie, and this review maybe too late to matter, but I just can't stand idly by and let this film get bashed by critics. No, no, no!
From start to finish, "The Punisher" was very satisfying--and I'm not even very familiar with the character's history of the main character...only that his name is Frank Castle and that he wears black most of the time, with a skull symbol on his chest. For a comic book film it was rather violent--but that served its purpose. He is called the Punisher after all.
Thomas Jane gives a good performance as Frank Castle. John Travolta is, as usual, very reliable as the bad guy. And the supporting cast did their jobs well too.
The story is exciting, well written and very smart--I loved the way Castle made Howard Saint (Travolta) suspicious of his wife and his right-hand man (played by a very convincing Will Patton).
Nice action sequences and some really brutal scenes like the Castle clan massacre and Saint dropping his wife off a bridge--but like I said, it served its purpose.
The ending of the film obviously screams, "SEQUEL! SEQUEL!". And, as confirmed by Tom Jane himself, there will be one.. maybe even two.
