Review of The Puffy Chair (2006) by Eric R — 29 Jul 2010
I just listened to a podcast of the two brothers--they seem like pretentious a-holes. what rubbed me the wrong way was that they take their films and the filmmaking process so seriously. they kept using the term "art" which I dunno, it is art, but come on, let be real. one way you can criticize this whole mumblecore movement is that its really sloppy. if you are going to be sloppy on purpose, at least have a sense of humor about it. I just wish they didn't have to be so high falutin and dismissive of questions that come their way. but whatever, maybe it was just a bad day.
All that being said, I LOVED this movie. messy and sloppy but in a good way. there's nothing new in this story--i read a review that says basically this movie is another sideways: road movie, two brothers with different dispositions, a girl thrown in. that's this movie too, but I dunno, I definitely liked this one better.
I think what I loved about this movie were the relationship interplay between the two brothers and the couple. you've seen hundreds of movies with brothers and two lovers but never played with the subtlety and rawness here. definite thumbs up and on the top of the list of movies I recommend.
