Review of The Public Enemy (1931) by Amanda R — 06 Mar 2008
The first of Cagney's several gangster films showcases everything he would be known for later in his career. The film remains brutal although most of the violence is off screen in fact the film is probably less glamorous than most crime films made today.
What is also interesting is Wellman's use of sound(which was still fairly new) showcases what was not possible with silent pictures.
