Review of The Public Enemy (1931) by Jordan T — 13 Jun 2009
One of the films that invented the gangster genre, and again one that has to preach to you how bad the mob is. James Cagney is just a G in every way. He starts out small, eventually hits the big time, marries some girl he picked up at a club, immediately cheats on her, hits her, lies to his family about his income, and naturally meets his untimely end after pissing off the wrong people.
It's short and it's kind of funny to see the way Cagney just abuses everyone around him and they take it. Wasn't a fan of the ending at all, but it foreshadows the good older brother possibly seeking revenge.
If you like Gangster Flix then you have to see one that set the precedent.
