Review of The Public Enemy (1931) by Adrian B — 08 Apr 2011
Another recently seen dissapointment. What I was expecting from "The Public Enemy" was a fast paced crime thriller with a roaring performance by James Cagney. Instead, I got a slow-paced, almost autobiographical like film in which Cagney's character is shown from his misbehaved childhood to evil dealings as a gangster.
I was not impressed. There was little in the way of entertainment. I found the film to be dated and the performances to be pretty average. The middle was so slow! I will credit the somewhat interesting premise and the mention of prohibition and the treatment of that matter.
Other than that, there was not much more. I expected another Cagney performance and movie like "White Heat." Didn't get it.
