Review of The Proposition (2005) by Samuel G — 07 Oct 2009
Rather well made film with good turns from Winstone and Pearce in the gritty tale of real criminal scum in arid and dirt poor Australia. Some of the language towards the Aboriginal characters is not appealing at all but this is a real life depiction of what it was like then and it comes across as so.
The climactic ending was fairly obvious especially so when Winstone hands the bullwhip to Wenham's stuffy governor character and informs him that he's just signed all their death warrants. Was particularly pleased with Winstone - he is a bit of a lads lad playing quite often a stereotyped role but he portrayed the slightly obsessed but devoted police chief very well.
