Review of The Proposition (2005) by Daniel S — 11 Dec 2009
Dang it why did I have to rent this movie? I got it because Guy Pearce was in it, but you know what? They gave that guy nothing to do. He is essentially a non-character and his central question - the proposition he is faced with - carries no weight.
In fact, almost none of it does because there is no one to root for. The only character we almost get to know is the sheriff's wife, the ray of light and only interesting person in the film. What's with the singing and whispered poems from people who by rights shouldn't have any idea about such things? It's like someone tried to make 3:10 to Yuma into a Terrance Malick tone poem and dump buckets of blood on it.
This movie thinks it's about all kinds of things but honestly the only theme that comes through is revenge and retribution. It seems the Australian history attracted good actors to an undercooked screenplay.
