Review of The Proposition (2005) by Christopher M — 10 Feb 2009
This a beautiful-looking film about a series of ugly incidents. Pearce's character doesn't seem to have much agency, saved from death by a deus ex machina one time too many, and this makes it more difficult to empathize with his difficult, heartwrenching mission.
The plot would also grind to a halt too often for my tastes, though the film wisely used these moments to create an uneasy lull before scenes of swift, brutal frontier violence. Given the harshness of the locations and the swarms of flies, it's not surprising that "The Proposition" is best when parsing all of the horror and disgust and viscera that so often accompanies the establishment of "civilization.
" You just have to wade through quite a bit of pretension (that musical score!) to get there.
