Review of The Proposition (2005) by Josh M — 21 Sep 2010
A dark, gritty, spin on the modern Western this is definitely another reason why I like John Hillcoat. Like The Road Hillcoat went on to direct this is a character piece that delves into the human condition.
Hillcoat is a director who is not afraid to hold our eyes open and make us stare into the darker parts of human emotion. From our sometimes misguided sense of justice to just how far can the limits of family be tested.
Guy Pearce may be the headliner and deliver a solid brooding performance but it is Ray Winstone the steals the show with his portrayal of the tortured Captain Stanley. Not a movie for everyone but if the idea of a dark Western set again the Australian outback appeals to you then this is definitely worth watching.
