Review of The Proposition (2005) by Michael L — 02 Dec 2010
Out of the many westerns that I've seen over the years, only two have stood out above and beyond all the rest. One is "The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly" and the other is "The Proposition.
" Set in Victorian Australia, "The Proposition" does not glamorize the wildness of the backlands (as most American westerns from the '30s and '40s had a tendancy of doing),but rather show the despair, isolation, and living hell that the empty lands of the Australian Outback and the American Wild West held for those who ventured into their wide stretches of empty desert and treacherous mountain regions and empty canyons.
In this regard, "The Proposition" feels like an adaptation of one of my favorite novels, "Blood Merdian" by Cormac McCarthy, and captures the brutality of the real Wild West, a land where law was just a dream and ruthlessness ruled.
