Review of The Proposition (2005) by Conor B — 13 Mar 2011
Hot. Oppressive. Dirty. Suffocating. Burning. Sweaty. Gasping. A dirty, fairly relentless little film, the screen burns orange with the heat of the desert which oozes out the screen. Everyone is dirty, sweaty, covered in flies.
The logline for this film is somewhat deceptive as the story has little to do with the inter-relationship between the brothers nor in fact 'the proposition' it's merely a hook on which to hang a set of circumstance and motives and is actually somewhat clunky in it's set up and execution.
Everything else about the film however, is pretty spot on. U can't hardly hold a breath in parts simply due to how such a strong, heavy weight of oppression hangs over everything and everyone. There are punctuations of pretty extreme violence which puts you back on edge just when you think you can settle down.
The film isn't the best western iv seen, but it's got a strong and unique identity, so it's a great entry into the genre.I like the fact that there are no 'release' moments whatsoever for the entire length of the film, that's not to say it's action packed, it's not- but there's not a single moment of levity to allow you to release some tension.
It grips you from the start and tries not to let you breathe, and I think it very successfully achieve that.
