Review of The Proposal (2009) by Niki L — 02 Jan 2013
This is a fair bundle of laughs which I wasn't expecting. I must stop assuming that all American comedies are going to be dreadfully poor and have as much dimension as Jennifer Anniston's acting ability! Sandra Bullock pulls her role off in this one quite well.
Probably has a very similar vibe to it as Miss Congeniality but albeit predictable, the jokes and the story are good enough to keep it entertaining. Basically revolves around a managing director who faces deportation to Canada within a few days (and the loss of her job) until she spontaneously wishes to marry her assistant in order to grant herself citizenship.
This is her assistant who she has used and abused for several years and not given a single care in the world for..........until now. As they go through all the trials and tribulations of acting like partners, things become awkward for them (and comedic for us) as they have to endure cozy sleeping arrangements, a million and one family questions, pressure from the immigration officers who are determined to catch them out, and of course their initial loathing for one another.
...... .....but how that can change over a weekend together! It's very much a chick flick style film but not a 'I want to put my boot through the tv' chick flick, more a laugh a minute credible one! Worth a watch if you're having a moment of weakness like I clearly did!
