Review of The Proposal (2009) by Sammy S — 18 Feb 2014
The Proposal: The Perfect Blend of Romance and Comedy.
Looking for a movie for girl's night in or just in need for a good laugh? Well, look no further, The Proposal is one of the greatest romantic comedies released in 2009. The Proposals hilarious script, comedic plotline and amazing acting it is a must see.
Lead actress Sandra Bullock, has an ability to play strong independent woman characters while still mixing in her quirky humor. this makes her perfect to play Margret Tate, the controlling boss who forces her assistant, Andrew Paxton (played by Ryan Reynolds) to marry her. Ryan Reynolds good looks aren't his only contribution to the movie, he also acts as a great foil character to Margret Tate, with his down to earth personality, which makes for some great onscreen chemistry. Bullock's relatable nature and perfect execution of clumsy yet sexy consumes the audience's attention. If this duo wasn't enough the move also stars Betty White, an American favorite, who plays Grandma Annie. Betty White completely embodies her character as a caring yet controlling grandma. Her out-there personality adds the finishing touches that any comedy needs and also serves as a good moral character.
In addition to the great acting, writer, Pete Chareli, did an excellent job of incorporating a comedic twist to a fraud marriage for a green card. The rapid timeline adds to the overall plot of a short noticed wedding, never leaving a dull moment. This is especially the case when you mix in all the twist and turns of wedding planning and dealing with the in-laws. The script was truly riveting, with ingenious comedy that keeps the audience laughing and yet still develops an overall moral lesson of love. The last half of the movie was predictable, like most romantic comedies, but it makes up for it with its original humor that only this cast could create.
The movie itself was also beautifully produced; the scenery was breathtaking with all of the rich colors of nature and really contributes to the total quality of the movie. The filming included lots of landscape views that showed the true beauty of an Alaskan summer, as well as complimenting the unique architecture of the Paxton's estate. The movie was also shot in a small town with many warm, inviting colors that contrast the harsh greys of New York City from the beginning of the movie. The music also plays a great role for setting the tone of the movie; and even ended up winning BMI film award (2010). The music also intensifies the degree of the comedy associated with Sandra bullock's dancing "skills.".
The Proposal's undeniably funny humor in return won Favorite comedy in both the People's Choice Awards and the Teen Choice Awards (2010). This movie is definitely a chick-flick with its twisted love story and eye candy Ryan Reynolds, but was it excellently produced and scripted, which are enhanced by great actors giving it a truly unique final product. I would recommend this movie to anyone who enjoys romantic comedies and is looking for a good laugh.
