Review of The Prophecy (1995) by Alan A — 04 Jan 2010
With Legion just around the corner now I felt it was worth revisiting another War in Heaven with The Prophecy series. The first movie in the series is slow paced, yet engaging despite lack of action. This is on the heals of the amazing actors present whose careers may have been at B level back then but several have stepped into A level careers with a few Oscar nods under there belts as well.
Christopher Walken, Eric Stoltz, and Viggo Mortensen are just a few of the recognizable names in this film. The film relies heavily on the actors as the script is mediocre at best, but it never quite goes the way you think.
It travels a twisting path where leads meet there fate early in the film only to swap out with others in the cast who step up sometimes out of nowhere. Its unpredictable nature is also what made this franchise interesting but subsequent sequels suffered from the same fate as horror films with the seeming demise of the villain only to have him reappear in the next film, which ultimately probably lead to the demise of the franchise mostly due to disinterest, rather than traveling new ground.
Still not a bad primer for the upcoming Legion and worth a look.
