Review of The Promotion (2008) by Ricky W — 28 Nov 2008
This movie was enjoyable to watch, but nothing really stood out about the film immediately afterwards. It was just a good simple comedy comparable to Office Space. I didn't think Office Space was all that special the first time I saw it either, but it's kind of a classic comedy now.
The humor in this film runs through the same kind of dry, ironic but ridiculous vein. Not my favorite performance by John C. Reilly because he's playing a fairly tame and calm natured ex-drug addict through most of the film, but Seann William Scott is surprisingly funny as a mild tempered guy trying to find a bit of self respect.
The posters and the ad's for this film lead the audience to believe it's more of a slapstick, "Employee of the Month" type of movie, when it actually tries a bit harder to be realistic than the typical comedy.
The acting really carries the film because the story doesn't have a whole lot to offer. It's bland kind of how a real life situation like this would carry out where people would bring drama where there really isn't any.
But it's that blandness and the ridiculous nature of all the characters in the film that make this film funny.
