Review of The Promise (2017) by Lena M — 24 Apr 2017
"The Promise" was an excellent film for people who do not know much about Armenians or the Armenian Genocide. I would highly recommend anyone who does not know about this time period in history to watch the film.
It does not go into a lot of detail about the Genocide nor does it show much graphic events; however, I think that's perfect since it's aimed at an audience who doesn't know about the event to begin with.
I am so happy that such a film has made it to the big screen and I hope that many people can learn more about this catastrophic historical event. Oscar Isaac is a phenomenal actor and one could feel every emotion and thought as he played the part of Mikael.
Despite him not being an Armenian, he looked like any typical Armenian man, and his accent was spot-on. Charlotte Le Bon and Christian Bale also had excellent performances. This is definitely one of the best films I have ever seen and is the best film about the Armenian Genocide.
It is raw, emotional, educational, and simply powerful. I hope that this film is shown in schools so the youth can learn about the Genocide. It has such a powerful storyline and is historically accurate.
I would recommend anyone to go see this film, Armenian or not.
