Review of The Producers (1968) by Gary C — 31 Jan 2008
One of the good Mel Brooks films of all time. Better because of the presence of Zero Mostel, one of the funniest and best performers of his time (shamefully blacklisted by the McCarthy era commie hunt).
Gene Wilder and Zero Mostel are excellent together, but the music for the play they stage to make a flop is the part one comes away humming (as Brooks wanted most). Inevitably, one must see this to get the way it slips through the cracks with a poke at Broadway and a jolt of humor to the performing arts.
Well worth the time to watch.
