Review of The Producers (1968) by James B — 13 Oct 2009
My official favorite movie OF ALL TIME! Pacled with gobs of memorable actors, characters and dialogue, this is definitely a movie worth seeing. Admittedly, the humor is a little off the wall, so it takes a special kind of person to appreciate this gem of a movie, but if you are that special kind of person this movie is certainly worth your while.
Headed by the impeccable Zero Mostel, this movie is about a washed up broadway producer named Max Bialystock who gets the idea of a lifetime from bumbling accountant Leo Bloom (Gene Wilder) when he comes to do Max's books.
They aim to strike it rich by raising more money from backers than they need, produce the biggest flop on Broadway and take the remainder of their money to "Rio, Rio by the sea-o". You know you've got something special when the name of that play happens to be "Springtime for Hitler".
From the moment this movie opens, Max Bialystock playing kinky sex games with 92-year-old Estelle Woodward, to the second it closes, it is pure, non-stop hilarity. Keep your eye on my personal favorites, Zero Mostel as Max, Dick Shawn as LSD, Kenneth Mars as Franz Liebkin and the play director, Roger Debris.
