A terrific and original comedy that still feels fresh today. Mel Brooks got zanier as time went along, but this is him at his most restrained, and it's a great concoction. Zero Mostel and Gene Wilder have hilarious chemistry that seems to go beyond the two characters they're playing and Dick Shawn, as well, grabs a bunch of laughs as the lead in Springtime for Hitler.
There're less guffaws here, compared with other Brooks productions, but that doesn't take away from how dead-on the comedy is.
