Review of The Producers (1968) by Jason K — 20 Nov 2011
Mel Brooks didn't write a subtle joke in his entire career - it figures that his two finest moments came from a brazenly racist western (Blazing Saddles) and this, a musical comedy about Adolf Hitler. Gene Wilder and Zero Mostel are a great team, even if their timing and Brooks's material are both hopelessly dated by today's standards.
By all means, The Producers is a classic that leaves little to the imagination but delivers great performances - Mostel at the end of a stellar stage career and Wilder at the launch of a masterful film career - and more than a few moments of broad strokes humour.
