Review of The Producers (1968) by Isaac M — 01 Sep 2013
Much like all of Brooks' work, The Producers is is to an acquired taste. That taste is sour and off. As usual, Brooks attempts to be as un-pc as possible, which, in the case of Blazing Saddles, worked well.
However it did not go so well in The Producers; notably the 'auditions for Hitler' scene. The film is also excruciatingly slow, with every scene feeling like it had been stretched to be as long as possible, just falling short of frying viewers' brains.
For Mel Brooks fans, it's a must-see. For the rest of us, it's a must-avoid.
