Review of The Prize Winner of Defiance, Ohio (2005) by Myton P — 09 Dec 2009
Enjoyable but not a great flick. Julianna Moore was too beautiful to play the part of Evelyn Ryan. It added to the superficiality of the character - played too happy (another June Cleaver???.) Perhaps this is how Ryan was presented in her daughter's memoir (I haven't read it.
) I enjoyed Woody Harrelson's more realistic performance but felt his drinking problem resolved too obliquely. Melanie Tonello was wonderful as her feisty & willful pre/young teen daughter. I think this would make a wonderful stage play.
It is set almost entirely in their home & yard and the tension/release could come off well.
