Review of The Prize Winner of Defiance, Ohio (2005) by Harry C — 30 Nov 2006
8/10.
This is a film about compromise. Compromising no matter how strongly we feel otherwise. Julianne Moore plays a stay at home mother raising 10 kids during the 50s. As soon as times are tough and her alcoholic husband can't seem to keep his earnings out of the liquor store she manages to win jingle-contest after contest. Cars, shoping sprees, washing machines, you name it. It is her writing talent which could be her ticket out of the house and onto the payroll of any major newspaper or magazine across the country. Instead her talents are used to support her family, giving her children the oppurtunities she denied herself. As opposed to blind selflessness, she knows and accepts what she does, and for this she is rewarded in the end.
