Review of The Private Lives of Pippa Lee (2009) by Gerard A — 14 Jul 2009
The premise here is certainly nothing new - a look behind the seemingly perfect wife's colourful past and despairing future. The cast are good and despite the story taking some surprising or interesting turns - the movie is a bit unsatisfying.
Not quite funny, dark or sombre enough in tone - there are times when Pippa Lee engages it's audience but is just as quick to let them down with an unexpected cop-out. The acting for the most part is good - though Keanu Reeves could be made into a nice coffee table so wooden is his performance, portraying little of the personal struggles his character should.
The final scenes seem too unrealistic and unnecessary based on what goes on before. Some of the motivations seem tenuous at best. Could have been a really powerful, funny and compelling but falls short on all accounts.
Worth a watch to see a great cast but something of a missed opportunity.
