Review of The Private Lives of Pippa Lee (2009) by Andrew S — 12 Mar 2010
Such a great ensemble of a cast and extremely talented director but sadly this film was a disappointment. I expect so much more from the likes of Rebecca Miller. While the characters and challenges that do arise over the course of the film are interesting.
The story just fails to absorb and captivate the mind. We just go through the movie quietly viewing Pippa's lives but still never really truely understanding her. There was room to delve deeper into the complexity of Pippa's past and her relationships.
But the flashbacks are too little and move along a little too fast in fact. Robin Wright Peen gives a quiet and subtle performance but some of the other women just come off a bit whiney and annoying such as Zoe Kanza and Winona Ryder's character.
I think the film really had potential to be a great drama and examination of one woman's life and her many lives within it but it only scratches the surface.
