Review of The Private Life of Sherlock Holmes (1970) by Jonathan B — 29 Jul 2009
Somewhat unsatisfying end to a film that felt like it completely missed the cinematic revolution of the 1960s (unsurprising though given that it was directed by one of the most respected movie makers of the pre-1968 era).
Billy Wilder tried to show a darker Holmes than the one we usually think of, but it did not break too much from the more traditional PG view of the character. The actor who played Watson really over did it in most of his scenes as well.
