Review of The Princess and the Frog (2009) by Sharon L — 03 Jul 2012
Finally, a princess movie that breaks the old cycle! Well, besides Mulan. I like the fact that the hard-working Tiana gets the prince instead of her rich, white friend. Really fun movie with a nice moral: You can't be lazy to achieve your dreams.
Though that moral is a little... well, unfair.
[SPOILER ALERT].
My biggest grievance with this movie, though, is the fact that], in the end, Princess Tiana merely completes her dream of owning a restaurant and working hard. Now most other Disney princesses get to live in a castle and live luxuries. Meanwhile, the only black princess gets to continue working... but not as a ruler... as a restaurant owner. Great job, Disney. True, this is probably the most modern Disney princess, but why does she get to be the only princess who gets to continuously endure the hardships of the modern, working-class person even after she has achieved royalty? Oh, and while Tiana's rich friend may not be royalty in the end... she still has it good, possibly better than Tiana.
Plus it was sad when the firefly died. Just saying. Oh, an the black magic dude's back story should have been explained more I think.
[END OF SPOILER].
But even with all of this, it's still an enjoyable, recommendable movie.
