Review of The Princess and the Frog (2009) by Ken S — 07 Dec 2011
After Home on the Range, Disney cancelled traditional animation, believing by the success of Pixar that computer animation was the only avenue left for success in animated films. Of course, the truth is that it doesn't matter how the movie is made, just as long as it's good.
..and Disney's animation studio was coasting after their success in the 90s. But after Pixar was bought up by Disney, and it's leaders became leaders of Disney's animation studio as well...
Traditional animation was revived. The Princess and the Frog was the first return to traditional animation. It has heart, good characters, some decent songs, beautiful traditional animation, and a fun adventure.
It is (almost oddly so) the first Disney Princess film to feature a black "princess". I really liked that they used the American south and showed the segregation and the difference between black and white culture in the South without getting preachy about it.
It's more of a visual thing. The movie also pokes a little fun at the old Disney cliche of characters just wishing for what they want, in this movie they make it clear that you have to work hard, and not just wish for what you want (which is actually a good thing to be teaching kids).
All in all, I found this to be a decent film, that feels like it perfectly fits in with the old Princess classics of Disney.
