Review of The Princess and the Frog (2009) by Ryan V — 08 May 2012
The Princess and the Frog marks the return of the animation crew that produced well-received films like The Little Mermaid, Beauty & The Beast, The Lion King, and Aladdin. This effort is a blatant effort to recapture the lucrative formula of those movies, but it mostly sticks the landing.
The plot, which brings the familiar fairy tale to 1920's New Orleans, concerns a hardworking cook (Anika Noni Rose) with dreams of opening her own restaurant. Her path is waylaid by a conniving voodoo priest (Keith David) and a nasty curse he places upon a vain and lazy African prince (Bruno Campos).
The Princess and the Frog may be a bit too traditional for those used to kids movies by the likes of Pixar, but there's enough warmth to entertain little girls and nostalgic adults alike.
