Review of The Princess and the Frog (2009) by Steve S — 27 Jun 2013
***1/2 (out of four).
Over the last few years we have had one computer animated film after another released. Some, like Pixar's "Up" and "WALL-E" have been wonderful, while others like "Madagascar" and "Open Season" have been not so good. Mostly I have had computer generated overload! Everything is starting to look the same in them. I am so glad to again experience the freedom and warmth of Disney's hand drawn animation and "The Princess and the Frog" is a great welcome back present to the form.
1920's New Orleans proves a magical setting for the story of a young black waitress named Tiana who one day hopes to open her own restaurant. When Prince Naveen arrives in town he has been cut off from his royal parents because of his partying. He won't be reinstated until he marries and settles down. Instead he is changed in a frog by the VooDoo dabbling Dr. Facilier. Thinking Tiana is a princess, Naveen kisses her changing her into a frog as well.
The animation is wonderful and Dr. Facilier is a superior villain. The songs by Randy Newman are mostly pretty good and surprisingly, the Prince is one of the best characters.
It is sure good to have the Disney studio back doing what they do best.
