Review of The Prince of Egypt (1998) by Rink S — 30 Mar 2009
I am an atheist. Actually the fact that it derived from a story in the bible was a reason not to watch it until now.
I tried to watch it as a - fictional - story, but it was quite hard to do so. It was easy until the god of the hebrew appeared (well as that burning bush thing) and said how he will smite egypt (quite irritating for several reasons). Of course it did not get better as soon as he actually did smite it.
I think they really tried not to rub religious beliefs in the face of the audience and did try to tell the story like you would tell a story about greek gods or roman gods appearing in it. But as a grown up watcher I was unable to ignore that many may take this seriously - for example with the aggressive god figure that punishes a whole country and kills many children. For me the great animation and solid music does not make up for that.
