Review of The Prince of Egypt (1998) by Harry W — 28 Jun 2013

Although The Prince of Egypt is excellently animated and cleverly uses an animated tale to tell Egyptian history, it isn't a gripping story to viewers wanting stimulation since there is minimal theme of adventure or fun in it due to its focus on historical drama as opposed to adventure.

I didn't find myself falling into the story at all because although a colourful film, it was merely a historical/biblical drama film which told a story about the Egyptian prince which essentially has been told plenty of times before. I didn't feel any real magic in the air that usually comes from a popular animated tale like this, and so it just wasn't a film I could embrace easily since the story was set up to be cool based on the sequence involving racing chariots and the sphinx but quickly turned into a merely slow-paced melodrama. The problem is that The Prince of Egypt just isn't a fun movie, and that's what I hoped for. And despite somewhat decent music and excellent quality animation, The Prince of Egypt was just not a tale I would deem worthy of sitting through.
